12:00 AM Raksha Bandhan
Hindu holyday: On the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana, the deep love of brothers and sisters is celebrated with the act of sisters tying the sacred Rakhi thread, often made of gold and silver silk with semiprecious stones, around their brothers’ right wrists, signifying their inseparable bond of affection and trust. Rakhis may also be tied on close friends and neighbors, symbolizing their deep bond, and Rakhi festivals underscore the need for everyone to live harmoniously as brothers and sisters, with all people helping and protecting each other.
9:00 AM - 7:00 PM Haymarket, the Soul of the City - Photo Exhibit
Haymarket, Boston’s outdoor food market, has served a constant stream of longtime residents, newly arrived immigrants, students, and tourists since the first half of the nineteenth century.

Historic New England has partnered with the Haymarket Pushcart Association to document the Haymarket’s people and life through photographs by Justin H. Goodstein and oral histories gathered by curator Ken Turino.

The Adams Gallery presents an exhibit of 43 photographs and a video capturing the sights and sounds of the four seasons at the Haymarket.

The curators will be on hand to discuss the exhibit from from 5:30 to 7:30 PM on Thursday June 25.

The Haymarket  documentary will premiere at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, at the Modern Theatrefollowed by a talk-back led by Suffolk Professor and History Department Chair Robert Allison.
Free tickets for the film may be reserved online.

All events are free and open to the public.
