All Day Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Roman Catholic holyday: This Holy Day of Obligation, the most important of the Marian feast days, with origins in early Christian communities, commemorates when Mary, Mother of God, completed the course of her earthly life and bodily ascended to Heavenly glory, anticipating the destiny of Christ’s followers.[1] Assumption Day, a public holiday in parts of Europe and Latin America, is observed at Mass around the world and with processions in the streets in some places. [2]

All Day Dormition of the Theotokos
Orthodox Christian holyday: Preceded by two weeks of fasting, the Dormition of the Theotokos (the Falling-Asleep of the One Who Gave Birth to God) is the Feast Day that commemorates when Mary, the God-Bearer, died, was resurrected, and bodily ascended to Heavenly glory. The Feast signifies that all who “have Christ born in them by the Holy Spirit” will share Mary’s fate. [1] Orthodox Christians joyfully break their fast with a feast and observe the Dormition with worship.
