End Date: 4/16/2015End Time: 2:30 PM

Event Description:
Join us for the Chemistry and Biochemistry Student Research Conference. Our students will be presenting their senior thesis work from research projects and internships, and refreshments will be provided.

The keynote talk from Dr. Daniel Faber will be at 1:00 PM. Dr. Faber is a Professor of Sociology and the Director of the Northeastern Environmental Justice Research Collaborative at Northeastern University (NEJRC). The NEJRC is made up of scholars dedicated to building a more transformative environmentalism in the United States and around the world (http://www.northeastern.edu/nejrc/).

Abstract: Environmental Justice and the Crisis of Environmentalism
In his talk, Dr. Daniel Faber will discuss some of the major achievements and challenges confronting the environmental movement.  America's largest and most powerful corporate polluters are leading a political offensive aimed at weakening many of the country's most essential environmental, occupational, and consumer protection laws.  In addition, corporate-led globalization is also facilitating the export of ecological hazards abroad.  The result is a deepening of the ecological crisis in both the United States and the Global South.  However, not all people are impacted equally, as it is the most marginalized segments of society —poor people of color and the working class—that suffer the greatest environmental abuses.  Hence, the environmental movement is at a crossroads.  This talk will address new forms of environmental activism that are beginning to take root in American society.
