Book Celebration: Theorizing Transitional Justice
by Nir Eisikovits (Suffolk) and Jack Rotondi, (United Way of Massachusetts Bay)
Lunch will be served.
Transitional Justice is a relatively new discipline that explores the moral, legal and political questions that arise when countries emerge from war and make a transition into civil society. This collection of essays, the first of its kind, takes up the theoretical foundations of this field. Questions include: do we always have to come to terms with past wrongs in a process of transition? What are the advantages and disadvantages of various instruments of transitional justice such as war crime trials and truth commissions? Are the requirements of the rule of law similar during times of transition to the requirements in settled democracies? The book also explores a variety of case studies from South Africa, to New Zeeland, and Ancient Athens after the restoration of its democracy.
