All Day Fast of Esther

The Fast of Esther is Jewish holyday, a fast from dawn until dusk on Purim eve, commemorating the three-day fast observed by the Jewish people in the story of Purim. As the Fast of Esther is not one of the four public fasts ordained by the Prophets, the laws concerning its observance are more lenient; pregnant women, nursing mothers, and those who are weak are not required to observe it.

When a student's behavior threatens to disrupt the classroom environment, it can be challenging to handle in the moment. In this workshop, we will identify reasons behind some common problematic student behaviors, including use of cell phones/laptops, failure to prepare for class, academic misconduct, and belligerence. We will then discuss strategies for pre-emptively preventing such behaviors, as well as effective methods for intervening in the moment. Click here to sign up for this workshop.

6:30 PM - 8:00 PM Sanctuary Cities
Municipalities all over the country are discussing whether they should become “sanctuary cities” for illegal immigrants and refugees. Some have long considered themselves sanctuary cities, but world events — including an increase of refugees due to the Syrian War and a new American administration eager to censure illegal immigrants — have brought the policy to the forefront.

However, even those who are informed about current affairs have difficulty understanding the precise definition of sanctuary cities and whether establishing them is a sound policy to promote immigrant rights. Join us for a panel discussion with Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone and New England School of Law professor Dina Haynes (additional speakers TBA) on the role of sanctuary cities in immigration policy.
