9:00 AM - 7:00 PM "The Mirror of Race: Seeing Ourselves through History"

The Adams Gallery at Suffolk University presents The Mirror of Race: Seeing Ourselves through History, a photography exhibit that challenges viewers to think about what they see when they look into this mirror onto an earlier time. Interactive elements suggest reflection about how one sees race – in oneself and in others.

The exhibit includes daguerreotypes, tintypes, ambrotypes and other forms of early photography as well as prints from tintypes made by an Air National Guardsman deployed to Afghanistan. Ed Drew’s modern-day tintypes are believed to be the first battle zone photographs using this method since the American Civil War.

11:00 AM - 12:30 PM Media in China: More Unintended Consequences?
Dr. Marcus Breen, Bond University, Queensland, Australia, will speak about  Media in China: More Unintended Consequences? 傳播? 中國?  結果?

This presentation will highlight issues that confront Chinese society because of the Internet. For example, the newly informed Chinese masses are demanding access to improved living conditions and rioting, which is an indicator of how the Internet may be able to empower the masses against the state.

This event, co-sponsored by the Rosenberg Institute for East Asian Studies and the Department of Communication and Journalism, is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
