All Day Imbolc
Wiccan/Pagan holyday in the Northern Hemisphere, begins at sundown the evening before. Imbolc is a Gaelic traditional festival marking the beginning of spring, held about halfway between the winter solstice and the spring equinox.  It was originally a pagan festival associated with the goddess Brigid, during which feasts were held, holy wells were visited, and Brigid was invoked to protect homes and livestock.  Although many of its customs died out in the 20th century, it is still observed as a religious holiday by Celtic Neopagans and Wiccans today.
All Day Lughnasadh (Southern Hemisphere)
Wiccan/Pagan holyday in the Southern Hemisphere, begins sundown evening before. Lughnasadh is a Gaelic traditional festival marking the beginning of harvest season, held about halfway between the summer solstice and the fall equinox (making its placement dependent on whether you live in the northern or southern hemisphere).  The festival itself is named after the god Lugh, and involved great gatherings that included religious ceremonies, ritual athletic, feasting, matchmaking, and trade. Although many of its customs died out in the 20th century, it is still observed as a religious holiday by Celtic neopagans and Wiccans today.

12:15 PM - 1:45 PM Free Speech on Campus

Political philosopher Sigal R. Ben-Porath, author of the acclaimed book Free Speech on Campus, will speak at Suffolk.

Her visit comes as campuses have become embroiled in free speech controversies, with speaker invitations canceled at Swarthmore and Rutgers, fires set by protesters at Berkeley, and physical fights at Middlebury. It seems that no campus is safe from this new phase of the culture wars. In her recent book, Ben-Porath suggests that campuses need to reaffirm their commitment to free speech and inclusion and to be clear about how both are tightly linked to their core missions. When speech events flare into the media, they often are inaccurately portrayed, and as a result conflict cannot be prevented or addressed effectively. Based on a discussion of current tensions as well as key arguments from students and scholars, Ben-Porath offers a clear framing for understanding current free speech tensions and for responding to them in the classroom, in students' social associations and clubs, and in public events on campus.

Ben-Porath is a professor of education, political science, and philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania.
