Event Description
Prof. Shirley Ann Smith received her Ph.D. from Harvard University with a dissertation on Gabriele D'Annunzio, nineteenth century poet and author. She studied at the University of Bologna and taught for many years at the University of Calabria, Italy. Currently she is associate professor of Italian at Skidmore College where she designs and teaches courses in language, literature, and culture both in English and in Italian. These include: Italian Women: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow; Italy, Fascism, and Jews; Food in Italian Literature; and A British Love Affair with Italy: the Grand Tour. Among her most recent publications are: "An Italian City in China," NeMLA Italian Studies XXXIII, Spring 2012, and "Banti's Humanism in 'Lavinia Fuggita,'" Italica, Fall 2012. Her book, Imperial Designs: Italians in China 1900-1947 (Fairleigh Dickinson University Press), was released most recently, in 2012.
Based on this latest book, she will tell us about the Italian colonial experience in China. Her book examines the Italian enclaves of Beijing, Tianjin, and Shanghai. It presents a view into the experience of the Far East as well as a confirmation of Italy’s imperial policy.
Co-presented by the Rosenberg Institute for East Asian Studies and the Department of History. Free and open to the public; refreshments will be provided. |
