All Day Chanukah (Multi-Day event) (Multi-Day Event)
Jewish holyday: Chanukah (Dedication) begins at sunset the evening before the 25th day of the month of Kislev, in remembrance of how the vastly outnumbered Jews, led by the Maccabees, miraculously won a major victory in 168 BCE against the occupying Syrians, who had outlawed Judaism and defiled the Temple of Jerusalem by worshipping idols of Greek Gods. After their victory, the Jews rededicated the Holy Temple to G-D by relighting the ner tamid(Eternal Light), but there was only enough oil for one day. Miraculously, the oil lasted 8 days, until more could be secured, so the light of the Temple could burn constantly.[i] A celebration of Jewish identity, religious freedom, and the triumph of light over darkness, the Festival of Lights is characterized by lighting an additional candle in the menorah each night. Other customs include making latkes, giving children Chanukah gelt (money or chocolate coins), and playing dreidel (a spinning top with the Hebrew lettersnungimmelhei and shin which stands for Nes Gadol Hayah Sham, meaning "a Great Miracle Happened There”).[ii]

11:00 AM - 3:00 PM Materials Matter 2 – Lavaughan Jenkins and Friends

The second of this two-part exhibit, Materials Matter 2 is a group exhibit of the work by Lavaughan Jenkins and four other Boston area artists. It explores the physicality of paint as an imperative, a rationale for the process and its conclusion. These two exhibits notate the continual elasticity of painting as it has been evolving over centuries, as an inverse mirror of the ever-accelerating changes in our culture in the Digital Age, and how that is changing the nature and perception of painting. It opens up the conversation among practitioners who are pushing the boundaries of the medium. The works shown are compelling both individually and collectively, as each artist has a different relationship with that conversation and with the material itself.

Opening reception 12/6/18 from 5:30-7:30 pm
