Event Description: Zoroastrian holyday: On this solemn occasion, Zoroastrians pray at home or at fire temples and hear discourses on the life and teachings of Zarathustra to commemorate his death. [i] Zarathustra, the world’s first Prophet, lived in Iran three or more millennia ago. Zoroastrianism, an ancient monotheistic religion concerned with the battle between good and evil, harmony between nature and humanity, purity, honesty, final judgment, and the reordering of the world, has ties to proto-Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Male priests in a hereditary line offer prayers to God, known as Ahura Mazda (the Wise Lord), on behalf of individuals in the sacred Avestan language. Today, Zoroastrians number only 100,000 worldwide and are a tolerated minority in Muslim Iran.[ii] |
