Event Description: Roman Catholic and Protestant Christian holyday: Christmas (Christ’s Mass) is the celebration of the Nativity of Jesus, the Child of God, born to the Virgin Mary. Christians typically go to Christmas Eve service and decorate their homes with nativity scenes. Many Christmas traditions such as Christmas trees, wreaths, Yule logs, mistletoe, feasting, gift-giving, and caroling have roots in Pagan celebrations of Yule, the Winter Solstice. Other deities including Horus, Attis, Mithra, Dionysus, Krishna, and some historical figures such as Zoroaster, Romulus, and Alexander the Great were also believed to have been born of a virgin, a number of them on December 25th. Various cases have been made in the history of the church for celebrating Christ's birth in May, April, March, January, and December. |
