Bodhi Day
Start Date: 12/8/2014 All Day
End Date: 12/8/2014

Event Description:
Buddhist holyday: Bodhi Day (Day of Enlightment) celebrates Siddharta Gautama’s attainment of Enlightenment while meditating under a fig tree 2,600 years ago, when he perceived the nature of the world and the cause of suffering, becoming the Buddha (Awakened One). On this day of remembrance and meditation, Pure Land Buddhists reflect on the cycle of life, the Eightfold Path, and the Four Noble Truths throughout the night and eat a meal of rice and milk, which the young girl Sujata offered the Buddha after his Awakening. Homes may be decorated with fig trees and images of the Buddha, and candles may be lit or lights may be turned on in the evening for the next 30 days to symbolize Enlightenment.[i]
