9:00 AM - 11:00 AM Starting Small and Making It Big: A Conversation with Bill Cummings

Greater Boston real estate magnate and philanthropist, Bill Cummings discusses his book Starting Small and Making it Big: An Entrepreneur’s Journey to Billion-Dollar Philanthropist.

Bill started his first business when he was six or seven years old selling soda at the neighborhood construction site. After graduating college, Bill purchased his first business for $4,000. He expanded and grew the business, and in 1970 he sold it. With the proceeds of this sale, he founded the commercial real estate firm Cummings Properties, and grew it from one small building to over 100 buildings in the greater Boston area. Bill and Joyce Cummings have always contributed their wealth to numerous causes, and in 1986 they founded the Cummings Foundation, which is one of the largest foundations in New England.

Bill will be speaking from his book, Starting Small and Making it Big: An Entrepreneur's Journey to Billion-Dollar Philanthropist. This autobiography spans the seven decades of Bill's journey in business and philanthropy, sharing his pioneering thinking that produced a multibillion-dollar enterprise. Copies of his book will be available to purchase.

In this contemporary adaptation of the 15th century morality play about how to achieve salvation, “The Somonyng of Everyman,” Death informs Everybody that he/she must die. After some negotiation, Death allows Everybody to bring someone along for company. Everybody asks Good Deeds, Kindred, Fellowship, and Love to take the plunge. Beauty, Discretion, Strength, Knowledge, and Five Wits also get into the mix. Who do you think will jump into the “wormy grave” with Everybody?
