Speakers: Dick Lehr (author, The Birth of a Nation)

Description: Dick Lehr, author of Black Mass, comes to us with a new story within America’s little known history surrounding one of the oldest films on record, The Birth of a Nation. In 1915, a journalist agitator and a brilliant filmmaker began an argument over this incendiary movie that portrayed post-Civil War era freed slaves as disgusting and dangerous. What followed was a public confrontation that spiraled into protests over civil rights. Join us to hear the true story of race, war, activism, and free speech that all began with a film.
