Symposium on Innovation in Teaching and Learning
8:30 AM - 3:00 PM

Sargent Hall - (Function Room, 1st floor)

Each year, the Office of the Provost, Information Technology Services, and the Center for Teaching & Scholarly Excellence at Suffolk University invite New England faculty, academic technologists, administrators, teaching and learning specialists, instructional designers, and distance educators to attend Suffolk University’s annual symposium. The symposium will include technology but will focus on approaching teaching and learning at Suffolk in a holistic manner.

Keynote speaker James M. Lang
is a Professor of English and the Director of the D'Amour Center for Teaching Excellence at Assumption College in Worcester, MA.  He is the author of five books, the most recent of which are Small Teaching: Everyday Lessons from the Science of Learning (Jossey-Bass, 2016), Cheating Lessons: Learning from Academic Dishonesty (Harvard University Press, 2013), and On Course: A Week-by-Week Guide to Your First Semester of College Teaching (Harvard UP, 2008).

Keynote: Small Teaching: From Minor Changes to Major Learning
Research from the learning sciences and from a variety of educational settings suggests that a small number of key principles can improve learning in almost any type of college or university course, from traditional lectures to flipped classrooms.  This interactive keynote will introduce some of those principles, offer practical suggestions for how they might foster positive change in higher education teaching and learning, and guide faculty participants to consider how these principles might manifest themselves in their upcoming courses.

The Innovative Teaching Award
The Innovative Teaching Award was introduced in 2017 to recognize faculty who are engaged in innovative teaching and to promote the dissemination of innovative teaching methods to the Suffolk community. The award will be presented at the 2018 Symposium on Innovation in Teaching & Learning on May 15, 2018. Please stay tuned later this month for the call for nominations.
