Philosophy Colloquium: Citizenship and the Problem of Freedom

Event Description:
A Philosophy Colloquium event featuring Charles Mahdy & Jeppe von Platz.

Focusing on Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Social Contract. In this presentation, the speakers discuss how individual freedom can be consistent with subjection to political authority and focus on Rousseau’s solution to this problem. Rousseau proposes that freedom and authority are consistent when the members of society develop a certain type of agency – in short, when they are citizens. In conclusion the speakers discuss what citizenship is and what the conditions of citizenship are.
